NOTE FROM
THE INTERIM PASTOR
Going to a new place can be
interesting and exciting. That is how it has been for me here at
Haysville. My initial time with you has been getting acquainted with the
church and various committees, and learning about the many ministries and
activities of the church. Every time I go to a new place, I have to learn
the community as well, such as where the local grocery store is, and the
local hospitals.
It is also important to have an opportunity to get acquainted with
the families of the church, giving you an opportunity to tell your story.
To accomplish this I am making this priority ONE for the month of February.
I would like to meet and greet as many of our congregation as possible.
I am aware that many of our people have busy lives, and with that a
busy schedule. I understand that very well. I need your help to
accomplish this very important task. My schedule is very flexible.
Appointments can be most anytime during the day or evening. It will be
easier for me to work into your schedule.
I am asking that you make an appointment for the pastor to call in
your home. Just call the church office and we can work out a time for a
60-75 minute visit. It can be at a meal time if it works better for your
schedule, but not necessary. Refreshments are also not necessary. It
should be a time that is comfortable with your family. It is a get
acquainted time with no hidden agendas.
It is true; I do have a Wichita Map Books, which lists all of the
streets of Haysville, Derby and Wichita in it. However, directions to your
home would be helpful.
This can be very helpful and healthy for our ministry together at
Haysville.
Blessings be with you all.

KEY
RECALL
Due to concerns expressed
by our insurance company and the Haysville police department we find it
necessary to recall all keys to the church which have been issued.
If you have a key in your possession, please return it to the office
or see Jim Holmes.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. If you need to
get into the building after hours while we are collecting keys, call Jim
Holmes (524-8125) or Dee Deck (524-6391) and they will be happy to open the
door for you. We ask for your patience as we complete this task. Keys
will be returned at a later date.

VALENTINE
DINNER
During February we treat
our favorite honey and/or ourselves with gifts of love and special treats.
Often this includes dinner to your favorite restaurant. How about letting
us treat you to a great dinner catered by Chef Peggy and her crew. We will
also play Bingo with prizes big and small. This dinner will be here at the
church on Saturday, February 7, at 6:00 p.m. If you need a baby sitter,
some of our youth will be providing that service. The cost of this dinner
is $12.00 each. You may buy tickets at church next Sunday. If you are
writing a check, please make it out to Lenora Heath. Please join us for an
evening of great food and fellowship and celebration of this wonderful
holiday. Church Growth

NOT BY
BREAD ALONE
Believe it or not, Sunday
will mark the beginning of the 4th and Final Quarter of our Bible reading
program. If you didn’t receive your new reading tent this past Sunday,
you’ll find it at the back of the Sanctuary. Reading consistently can be
hard to stick with, but many of you have and can testify to the rewards.
If you’ve fallen behind, get your tent anyway and keep reading. You’ll
eventually catch up. And, you know, the Word isn’t going to change in
the meantime.

WEEK OF
COMPASSION
“Where your treasure is,
there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).
For God, we are treasure: “You are children of the Lord your God.
... the Lord has chosen [you]to be his people, his treasured possession”
(Deuteronomy 14:1-2). One of the gifts of being God’s children is that
sometimes we are called to be “treasure tenders” for God. We are
invited to tend God’s treasures beyond our congregation by participating
in Week of Compassion. Life can be tough at times. Hurricanes, tornadoes
and tsunamis smash communities to bits. Wars and ethnic conflicts shatter
the very foundations of life, shoving people out of their homes and
countries. Persistent hunger, poverty, lack of education, and ill health
shrivel the life and dry the spirit. The current economic crisis right here
at home leaves us all feeling a bit uncertain. But we can do something
respond! Through Week of Compassion, we gently and effectively care for
God’s treasures. By sharing some of our earthly treasure—our money, our
time, our energy—decisive aid can be sent when disaster strikes. Refugees
receive help as they rebuild their lives. We help people help themselves
through education, health care, tools, seeds, and resources to improve
community infrastructure. And the sharing is mutual. When we care for
people, we can be transformed by experiencing the presence of God. Seeing
what others (or we ourselves) have lost, we are reminded what matters most
in life. Seeing what others live through, we’re inspired to live
courageously. Seeing that new life is possible, our hope rises. Our
treasure is doing God’s will, loving God, and loving God’s treasured
people, so we all “may take hold of the life that really is life”
(1Timothy 6:19b). Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart
will be also” (Matthew 6:21). May you find your treasure, and your heart,
by sharing resources and changing lives with a generous gift to Week of
Compassion. (Disciples Home Mission)
Please join us at First Christian in sharing your treasure February
15 and 22, 2009.
