Benediction

We go into the world today in peace and love.
We proclaim the Good News of Christ with courage.
We hold on to what is good
and return no one evil for evil.
We strengthen the faint-hearted,
support the weak,
help the suffering.
We honor all people.
We love and serve the Lord in the power
and strength of the Holy Spirit.
Amen

I am printing the Benediction we recited last week to help you become familiar with the words. However, my prayer is that the words we speak will not only take root, but will define us in the days ahead.

I have been so blessed, almost daily, as you have shared your hearts and desire to see First Christian Church become even more a light in our community and beyond. Your generosity has blessed 100’s in Haiti already, your warmth and caring hearts are communicated to anyone entering our doors.

I pray in the days, weeks and years ahead we focus our attention on people outside our doors who need the blessings of the people of God whether it be an encouraging word or other more tangible assistance. We are known by our love!

Friends,
This is good news with regard to everyone’s compassionate response to the Haiti earthquake. Please share with your congregations and beyond as you see fit.

Congress has passed legislation to make these immediate gifts, designated for Haiti, tax-deductible for either 2009 or 2010. See the attached note for specifics about dates and record-keeping. We don’t know yet if Kansas will follow suit.
Renee Bridwell, South Central District Minister

Colleagues – please see the attached information regarding the deductibility of 2010 contributions to Haiti relief as an accelerated contribution in 2009.

If you would, please pass this along to congregations in your region so that members might be educated about the possibility and church treasurers will know how to handle the gifts. I did discuss the receipting information with the OGMP audit firm. The note does advise people to check with their tax professional, especially since each state will have to decide regarding state income tax.
Thanks, Rev. Dr. Todd A Adams, Associate General Minister and Vice President, Office of the General Minister and President, PO Box 1986 , Indianapolis, IN 46206, www.disciples.org

Haiti Assistance Income Tax Relief Act
The Senate and House have unanimously passed legislation that allows taxpayers to deduct cash charitable contributions to aid victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. The bill was signed by President Obama on Friday, January 22, 2010. This includes contributions to local congregations designated for Week of Compassion Haiti Relief. Under this law, a donor who makes a cash contribution for the relief of Haiti and earthquake victims after January 11, 2010 and before March 1, 2010 can take a tax deduction for the gift for either 2009 or 2010. The law refers to this as an "acceleration" of the contribution deduction, since it may be claimed on the tax return filed for 2009, even though given in 2010. Churches that receive gifts from members are not required to issue a second contribution letter to members who choose the accelerated method. Members who make gifts to their church for Week of Compassion Haiti Relief and who choose the accelerated contribution method are required to keep their own record of the contribution. When their 2010 statement is issued from the congregation, the donor is expected to modify their deduction on their 2010 Tax Forms. Members who took the accelerated method are advised to keep a second copy of the 2010 contribution statement from the church with their 2009 tax records. The law addresses the Federal contribution deduction. Donors will need to check their own state for conformity and should consult with their tax advisor.

WEEK OF COMPASSION

“Feed my Sheep” is the theme for Week of Compassion this year. When Jesus said, “Feed my Sheep,” he was saying, “Take care of people.” Jesus was referred to as the Great Shepherd because he cared for people much like a shepherd cares for his sheep. Through Week of Compassion we can follow Jesus’ teaching by helping take care of the people of Haiti who have been devastated by the earthquake. (Week of Compassion)

WEEK OF COMPASSION OFFERING WILL BE RECEIVED AT FCC ON FEBRUARY 21 AND 28.
