NOTE FROM THE PASTOR
MILT
Success is not what we accomplished yesterday;
Success is what we make happen today!
In the various churches I have served, some of our greatest
successes have come from the church doing something on the spur of the
moment. WSU Shockers baseball is inviting churches and other organizations
to “FAITH NIGHT” on Thursday, May 14th!
There is something about a group of people from the church coming
together at a special event like a baseball game. At the same time there is
something about an event like this that has a way of bringing our church
together. Throughout their history WSU has a good baseball team,
frequently entered in the College World Series. The price for tickets for
this special event is very reasonable. It could be an exciting and
rewarding night for everyone. Let’s have a night out and go to the
ballgame.
Pentecost Sunday is May 31st, which is an important day in the life
of the church. On the one hand it is a celebration of the beginning of the
church, where more than 3,000 people responded to the apostle’s preaching
and were baptized. On the other hand it is a reminder to the church that
we must reach out beyond our walls and share the good news of Jesus Christ
– He lives!
I am of the mind that we need to do something celebratory to both
remember the event and to reach out with the good news. I need some
excited people to help make this happen. I am proposing that we release
some 200 RED balloons, outside, at the conclusion of the service. We would
put a tag on the bottom of the string indicating where they are from and
inviting people to come and worship with us. If you are willing to help
make this happen, please give me a call, either at the office, or my home,
or even my cell phone.
As Christians we are called to make a difference in the world. We
plant, we water, and then we see what God can do.
Blessings be with you all.
Milton Bryarly, Interim Minister

BELL STAND
Finally! Work has begun on the “Bell Stand”
which is in memory of the daughter of Jack and Charlene Braden. The hole
for the base was dug two weeks ago and the base was poured last Thursday.
We should begin seeing this long awaited project taking shape as soon as
the brick layer begins his work. The bell stand is located at the south
entrance of the church property, in line with the church sign at the north
entrance. Jim Holmes designed this project and we are anxious to see its
completion.

NOT BY BREAD ALONE
Wow! Can you believe this is the last week of the
Bible reading plan? More than one person asked me on Sunday for the next
reading tent—but, hey! You did it! If you have been following the
reading plan, you are almost done. If you, have fallen behind, don’t
give up. God’s word is timeless.
From Halley’s Bible Handbook, Revised Edition 2000, Page 15-18:
“Everybody should love the Bible. Everybody should read the bible.
Everybody.
It is God’s Word. It holds the solution of life. It tells about
the best Friend humanity ever had, the noblest, kindnest, truest Man who
ever walked on this earth.
It is the most beautiful story ever told. It is the best guide to
human conduct ever known. It gives meaning, a glow, a joy, a victory, a
destiny, and a glory to life elsewhere unknown.
Most people in their serious moods, must have some question in their
minds as to how things are going to stack up when the end comes. Laugh it
off and toss it aside as we may, that day will come. And then what?
Well, it is the Bible that has the answer. And an unmistakable
answer it is. There is a God. There is a heaven,. There is a hell. There
is a Savior. There will be a day of judgment. Happy is the person who in
this life makes his or her peace with Christ of the Bible and gets ready
for the final takeoff.
Individual, direct contact with God’s Word is the principal means
of Christian growth.
We need to keep ourselves, everyone of us, in direct touch with
God’s Word. It is the power of God in our hearts.”

THANK YOU
The First Christian family would like to
thank Ken, Birgit, Alex and Andrew Marsh for the “grill out” lunch they
prepared for the entire church following worship on Sunday, April 26. Ed
Chrisco who donated shingles for the gazebo won the grill.
Thank you so much for remembering me on Administrative Assistant Day
with gift cards from Applebee’s and Bath and Body Works. My job at First
Christian isn’t just a job; it’s a blessing to me. Everything extra
that I do is because I love this church and my church family. Dee
Thank you to Donna Atkeson and choir for the beautiful music!

LOOKING BACK
Does May 3, 1999 mean anything to you?
If you lived in this area then, it most certainly does, for that’s the
day a tornado roared through the area, destroying trees, homes, businesses,
and even our own church. Those of us who remember that day recall
mourning for the loss of the beautiful building built by our members. For
a time we wondered if church as we knew it would continue or if our members
would scatter to other churches. Fortunately, through the generosity of
the Haysville school district, we were able to meet at Rex School, where we
worshipped for just over three years. Through the tragedy we learned that
the church resides in its people, not in the building made of wood and
stone. As we recovered from the tragedy we grew in our faith. We realized
that many people and organizations cared about us and our loss, and through
their monetary gifts we were able to build a new church. On June 2, 2002,
a mere three years and a month after the tornado, we moved into the
beautiful new building on South Meridian where we now worship. As we
remember that day in 1999, we thank all who generously gave of their time,
talents, and money to build our new church. Most importantly, we thank
God, our creator and savior; great is His faithfulness!
