FROM THE PASTOR
Part of what is often called The
Great Commission, the instructions Jesus gave his disciples following his
resurrection, includes this phrase, "teaching them to obey everything I
have commanded you." Learning is an essential part of growing as a person.
Some of life’s lessons we learn on our own. For the rest we need
teachers.
What God especially wants us to know is recorded in the Bible.
In worship, in Sunday School, in other groups where adults, youth and/or
children focus on the Scriptures, learning takes place. All of these
settings require interested, dedicated and equipped teachers. Those who
first heard Jesus' direction to teach are no longer physically present.
Therefore, Christians in every age have this God-given responsibility.
Teachers have a major responsibility-so do learners. We need to
be committed to being present where learning takes place. NO ONE SHOULD
STAY AWAY FROM SUNDAY SCHOOL, A BIBLE STUDY GROUP, OR WORSHIP BECAUSE
HE/SHE FEELS LIKE HE/SHE DOESN’T KNOW ENOUGH. The purpose of these
various opportunities is to help us learn and grow. Then we too, can help
fulfill the Great Commission by word and deed. What a joy to be a
co-worker with God!
George

OPERATION CHRISTMAS
CHILD
For the last several years, our church
has participated in Good Samaritan's Shoebox mission. This year we are
mixing up things a bit. Instead of collecting items and packing boxes here
at the church we are asking each family to pack a couple of boxes at their
home and bring them to the church on Thanksgiving Sunday to be sent to the
packing center. If you would like a sturdy plastic box to use, please sign
up on the sheet in the sanctuary by August 31st so that these boxes can be
delivered on September 7th giving you 3 months to shop and pack your
boxes.

DISCOVER YOUR SHAPE!
A few years ago our church as a
whole, studied Rick Warren’s book "The Purpose Driven Life", as we
participated in 40 Days of Purpose. In a few weeks, the Seekers Sunday
School class is planning to revisit two segments of this powerful book as
we study and seek our spiritual gifts and the ministries God has designed
for each of us to do.
If anyone has a copy of "The Purpose Driven Life" book that they
could loan to the Seekers class for this study, it would be greatly
appreciated. Please note your name in the front of the book and drop it
off in the Seekers class. It will be returned to you at the end of our
study.
And we extend a welcome invitation to anyone who would like to
join us in this closer look at how God created each of us with a purpose
for our lives.

REGIONAL ASSEMBLY
October 17-18, 2008
Clarion Hotel—Manhattan, KS
BLEST BE THE LABYRINTH THAT BINDS!
Yes, the Labyrinth that binds is blessed! Are we serious? I believe
the answer is an emphatic YES! The planning team for the 20087 Regional
Assembly is excited about both theme and the program being developed for
the biennial gathering. Each congregation and all the ministers of the
Region will be celebrated! Yes, all the various ministries of our Region
will be highlighted and celebrated!
This means . . . each congregation and each minister will be an
important part of the assembly. Each ministry of our region will be lifted
up in our regional labyrinth. Together all of these will be brought before
God in Worship. We will celebrate what it means to be a part of the body
of Christ known as the Christian Church in Kansas!
What else can we look forward to? Dr. Nancy Pittman, Phillips
Theological Seminary will serve as our Labyrinth Theologian.
Installations will be celebrated too! The call of Paxton Jones as our
Regional Minister will be celebrated and we will install two new regional
associates, Ken Marston and Renee Bridwell.
What is a Labyrinth?
The labyrinth is an ancient spiritual tool, a metaphor for the journey
of life. Walking this sacred path, in a reflective mood, enables one to
ponder and evaluate where one stands in relation to God as the center of
one's spiritual journey, in relation to self and to others.
The labyrinth combines two common images, a circle and a spiral. Since
the circle is a symbol of God, its center also represents and leads to God.
As a spiraling path, the walk appears to be meandering, frequently
representing the circuitous days and years of one's spiritual journey.
Labyrinths invite us to be present to God, to quiet the mind, to calm
the body, to lead us to God and to come to grips with one's sorrows and
joys, and to meet the other with hospitality, service, and love.
